Q: 2007 BMW X3 or the 2008 Toyota Highlander Sport AWD???
I can't decide! Is the maintance package worth the extra cost of the BMW???

A: I would go with the Highlander. The car is cheaper to fix (if you ever need to fix it) and I think the new Highlander has more room than the X3. Edmunds.com says the Highlander has a pretty "fuel efficient engine" it probably costs less than the X3 too. Plus, BMWs get pretty expensive to fix after the warranty expires, so I think Highlander is better if your going to keep the car for more than 4 years.

Q: Why is the price spread on a 2008 Toyota Highlander 4x4 sport $14000, when searched on Yahoo.com vs Yahoo.ca?
The Invoice price paid by the dealer was left off of the Yahoo.ca website, so hard to know how badly the manufacturer is treating Canadian dealers and customers. I have heard recently of "Canadian" pricing, but it looks more like something to make us feel better, than actual savings in our pockets. Perhaps we need to demand "North American Homeland" pricing here in Canada. I understand that there are slight differences in Canada vs the US such as wages and taxes, but a $14K difference is insane. It really feels like the Auto Manufacturers are trying to recoup profits lost in the states due to "Homeland" pricing, and make it up on the backs of Canadians. We need to send these characters a strong message.

A: On Toyota.com the base Highlander Limited is $39,950 USD. If you were to convert that to Canadian dollar that would be $40,181. Instead on Toyota.ca it's $55,975. That about a 15,000 difference. About the only thing I can tell you is that the price is probably in the shipping. Most of the Canadian population is in the east, but Japan ships into the west coast. Therefore everything has to come either across the Rocky mountains in Canada, or from the United States. A lot of Toyota's come from the port of Houston, to avoid shipping from the west coast across the rocky mountains and the great divide. But even from Houston its still a lot of traveling.

Q: Four-wheeling in Toyota Highlander?
I have a 2004 Toyota Highlander Sport. I'm interested in doing some mild four-wheeling (nothing super-crazy) in it. I realize that it really isn't the best car for that sort of thing... but it is all I have and the couple times that I have taken it offroad (usually in the snow or at a mountain bike race) it has done very well. Any opinions?

A: Unless you consider a dirt road 4 wheeling that thing isn't built for it as you will quickly find out.

Q: Used Toyota Highlander formally owned by car rental place?
I saw a 2007 Highlander Sport used for $21,500. Seems like a good deal with only 27,000 miles on it. The ad had photos of the car's interior and exterior. Looks like new. The ad also incuded a link to the carfax report and the car has never been in any accidents or any other issues. However, the car was owned for 1 year and 1 month by a car rental place in New York . It was auctioned and sold to a Toyota Certified New and Used Car dealership here in Georgia. My coworker says I might want to do more research since that is too good of a deal and it was own at a Car rental place in New York for only one year. What do you think?

A: Car rentals keep there vehicles in good shape and turn them over because the resale value goes down very quick after a year so they make the most back selling the vehicle within a year of having the vehicle. I don't know about the price for this vehicle but if compare to other 07's it is a good price then go for it.

Q: Toyota Highlander Price Adjustment?
I am looking at purchasing a 2008 Highlander 4WD Sport, and I have recently seen a different listing for invoice and MSRP than when I fist looked. Does anyone know if there has been a price adjustment? What I have seen before: Invoice - $27,946 MSRP - $31,400 New price noticed on ajc.com Invoice - $26,655 MSRP - $30,000

A: Hi, Where did you see the first set of prices? Was it on the Atlanta Journal Constitution site or somewhere else? There has been no price increases of $1400 on the Highlander. First, and the most obvious idea (I know), is the two prices are for two different Highlander 4WD Sports with two different lists of equipment. Not all vehicles (no matter which manufacturer builds them) will come to a dealership equipped the same way, even if they appear the same online or in an ad. Some dealers just don't bother listing every option or feature, such as a rear cargo mat or alloy wheel locks. No, a mat or alloy locks will not equal $1400.00 (the mats are nice, but not that nice), but there may be several things that will add up. Websites are also famous for not including all the manufacturer charges on a specific vehicle, so two or three websites will have two or three prices for supposedly the same vehicle. One amount usually omitted or added incorrectly is the destination charge. For Toyota, the destination charge for cars is $660, and $685 for trucks, vans and SUV's. Advertising charges for all manufacturers are also added to the price of each vehicle. Those amounts definitely vary. Accesories added at the dealership also account for amounts not shown on an invoice or original factory sticker. And each dealership will have their own specific charge for preparing a vehicle and running the dealership that will be added to the bottom sticker price. Many sites do not include additional manufacturer charges beyond the supposed price of the "actual" vehicle, such as the destination or advertising charges. Some sites claim that you can exclude those charges from the negotiating price of the vehicle. But that is part of the cost of an auto company doing business, so don't assume you will not be paying them. Once again, two sites may have very different amounts for supposedly the same vehicle. BTW, I looked through 5 pages of Highlanders on the AJC site and never saw a Highlander 4WD Sport listed for $31,400. I checked Wed, 4/9 at 2:50 Central time. Either it has been sold and removed from the site (pretty quick for a newspaper listing) or the amount you originally was incorrect and was, or needed to be, changed. The thing to do is find out where the vehicle you want is located, find out what time the dealership is closed, and then go by with a pad and pen and write down what is exactly on that specific vehicle and the VIN. The VIN is the 16 digit number and letter combination located at the top of the sticker and for Toyota Highlanders it should start with a "J". Then you will have definitive information on the vehicles you ae looking at. Good luck and enjoy your new vehicle.

Q: Good price for 36 mo. lease of a Toyota Highlander '08?
I am trying to find out what the dealer's bottom line price would be for leasing me a Highlander, '08, V6, sport. If you have one, let me know what you're paying and if you know any good ways to get determine if I am getting a good deal. I am getting quotes from three dealers and I am going to buy this weekend. I am looking to put no money down and I have good credit.

A: A good rule of thumb for a 36 month lease is to pay about $150 for every $10,000 of the purchase price with no money down(plus taxes, title, doc. fee, plates, etc). For example, if the car is $30,000, you are looking at a lease rate of $450 with no money down (plus tax, title, doc fee, etc). If you put money down, this lease payment will go down, but there is no reason to do this since you typically have to have good credit to qualify for a lease, anyways. Also, I would never lease a car for more than 39 months. Figure out what the price of the Highlander you want is, and then use the above as a reference. For more information on the Highlander, check out edmunds.com. For more information of tips for leasing, check out autoscoop.com.

Q: Toyota is my favorite brand, and, in such hard time as is now, I'll ditch over 30 grand to support Toyota by?
(continued) buying an overpriced Highlander Sport. Am I a loyal customer by any means?

A: I'm also a loyal Toyota customer, not sure why. Just always have been, I didn't know the highlander was that much, my '09 Camry is just fine. I'm not into cars and stuff though, my husband makes fun of my Toyota if you're looking for something flashy you should probably look elsewhere.

Q: Do BMW M series cars need a lot of maintenance?
I currently drive a Toyota Highlander, but am looking to buy a sports sedan/coupe. Really like the BMW M3 reviews, but am a little worried that I will have to dish out big bucks for maintenance later. Does anyone here have any experience with Bimmers and other sports sedans? Suggestions for why other cars are better are also welcome

A: It will be expensive, but after the free service for 4 years or 50,000 miles

Q: How is the 2008 Toyota Rav4 in the city and on the snow?
We live in san francisco (hilly) but go to tahoe a few times a year over the winter. We are looking at the 2008 Rav4 4WD V6 but were not sure whether we should by the sport or limited. How well does this car do on the snow, comparing it to other bigger SUV's like the highlander. What are some con's in this car. Is it big enough for a 4 person family? What about the 3rd row seats, whats that like? give me as much info about this car as possible

A: The Rav is smaller, but as long as the people in the back aren't over 6ft tall, you shouldn't have a problem. My Rav (1998) does GREAT in the snow. I've done 45mph in snow and slush that was halfway up my wheels. Smart? Goodness no! But I didn't slide once.
